How to Maintain and Clean Your Humidifier

Humidifiers are great for adding moisture into the air, but can be breeding grounds for bacteria and mold. Here’s what you need to know to keep your humidifier clean.

By Clover Health

If you or a loved one struggles with dry skin, bloody noses, or hoarse coughs, think about using a humidifier. These handy appliances relieve the discomfort of dry air while also preventing symptoms of colds.

Just be sure to keep your humidifier clean by following these tips.

1. Use distilled or demineralized water.

Tap water has a higher mineral content than distilled or demineralized water. These minerals create deposits inside a humidifier that may cause bacterial growth.

2. Change the water daily.

Empty the tank, rinse it out, and let it dry. Then refill with clean water each day. This prevents deposit and film buildup.

3. Clean the humidifier every three days.

A 3 percent hydrogen peroxide solution is an effective disinfectant for the tank and other pieces of the humidifier.

4. Check the filter.

If your model has a filter, clean or change it regularly to help keep your air clean.

And there you have it, maintaining your humidifier can be as easy as following these four simple steps. If you try a humidifier and are still coughing, having nosebleeds, or dealing with dry skin, call your doctor to see if it could be a sign of another health concern.
